Faith, Freedom, and the Divine Arc of Justice: The Dred Scott Legacy

Lynne M. Jackson—direct descendant of Dred and Harriet Scott and founder of the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation—offers a profound reexamination of one of America’s most defining freedom cases. Blending historical insight with personal reflection, Jackson explores how a family’s quest for liberty sparked a national reckoning and continues to inspire reconciliation today. Through faith-filled storytelling, she invites audiences to see the Dred Scott story not only as a legal milestone but as a spiritual and family journey—shaped by dreams, courage, and divine purpose. This lecture will open hearts and minds to lesser-known truths, challenge long-held assumptions, and reveal how history, faith, and legacy continue to shape our path to justice.

BIO

Lynne M. Jackson, the great-great-granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott, continues to honor her ancestor’s legacy through education and advocacy. In May 2025, she led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand reopening of the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, where the Scott’s historic freedom suit was originally heard. The renovated courthouse now features a gallery dedicated solely to the Scotts and she is prominent in three video vignettes there.

In recognition of her extensive work, Jackson was honored with the Spirit of Justice Award by the St. Louis Bar Foundation in February 2024. This prestigious award acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to the legal profession and the community.  She is an inaugural member of the Freedom Suits Memorial Foundation which honors enslaved persons who sued for their freedom in St. Louis.  She helped dedicate the monument on Juneteenth 2022.

Among the groups where she has spoken are included the National Attorneys General Annual Conference (2007 and 2022) Harvard University, Brookings Executive at Washington University, Liberty University Law School, Virginia Hampton Rhodes at VUU, The Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA, Schomburg Center in Harlem, The Kennedy Center, The Lincoln Library and Museum, RootsTech 2024, numerous law firms, all levels of public and private school, museums, churches, and many other venues over the last 20 years.

Her passion for Biblical literacy and personal conviction drives her missions of educating individuals, groups and promoting faith-based living since she was a young child.  She produced a cable show on biblical apologetics as well as help home-based apologetic studies with her husband for 12 years before beginning work on the family legacy.  These two areas of passion blend well to tell the stories that bring hope and healing to her audiences.

Her signature program, Dred Scott Presents: Sons and Daughters of Reconciliation, brings over 50 other notable descendants under this umbrella to knit the national story together through faith, conversation, restoration and healing in this generation.

Through the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation which she started in 2006, its purposes are Commemoration, Education and Reconciliation. The Foundation commissioned the first statue of Dred Scott with his wife Harriet which stands across from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis as well as a new memorial monument for Dred at Calvary Cemetery. Through her tireless advocacy, Lynne M. Jackson continues to ensure that the legacy of Dred and Harriet Scott will endure, educating future generations about the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality in America. She holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is a trained classical pianist.
