Darius Gray
Darius Aidan Gray is a historian, genealogist, author, filmmaker, and leader within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He joined the Church in 1964, 14 years before the 1978 revelation restored priesthood access to Black members. In 1971, he co-founded the Genesis Group, serving as president from 1997–2003, and he co-directed the Freedmen’s Bank Records Project, restoring decades of inaccessible African-American genealogical records.
Gray is co-author, along with Margaret Young, of the historical-fiction trilogy Standing on the Promises and co-producer of the documentary Nobody Knows: The Untold Story of Black Mormons. His contributions to LDS history were recognized by the Mormon History Association, which praised him as one of the few to excel at both writing history and being history. He is also profiled in Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days, Volume 4.
Gray’s work centers on race, faith, and reconciliation, connecting ancestral legacy with spiritual witness to inspire inclusion and healing within the Church and broader society.
About the Legacy Series

“I call upon our members everywhere to lead out in abandoning attitudes and actions of prejudice. I plead with you to promote respect for all of God’s children.”
—President Russell M. Nelson

The Darius Gray Legacy Insight Series invites members and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to engage in a journey of understanding, healing, and reconciliation. Through thoughtful dialogue and reflection, the series seeks to break down racial barriers, illuminate truth, and strengthen families and communities in the gathering. The series is administered by the Black Lives Bless Foundation, a nonprofit organization recognized as tax-exempt under 501(c)(3).
